Mia had a wonderful week of learning and creating at Roots camp. The camp is led by two phenomenal local educator/herbalists, Lena and Fox at a local community garden. She came home with Cherokee songs, stories, special handmade items, knowledge of plants, and experience with local elders that they took field trips to see. Every afternoon, she came home grimy, sweaty, tired and contented. Just like summer days should be.
Plantain seed pods, taste like asparagus when fried up (Be sure you can identify correctly!)
Jasper got inspired to design his own pouch, too

Wow. What an amazing camp! I wish we had camps like that here. I love all the little treasures, necklace and wrist cuff.

yay! so nice that mia got to participate in this. i have heard wonderful things about those two. you all have been busy this summer!
This awesome camp is at Pearson's garden, in Montford. It really was a nice week for Mia. She is so proud of her bark pouch and leather bracelet. I recently picked up a book by herbalist Doug Elliot, with a section on making those bark pouches. I would love to try it myself.
Looks like a wonderful camp! I love her bark basket, and Jasper's too. I have one I bought from an amazing herbalist in New York and his wife(also an amazing herbalist) weaved the strap for it. I would really like to learn how to make them too.
Fantastic, how coo is that!!!!

Jacob spent last week at a similar camp, and oh my goodness the experience was really positive. There is something about experiences that shapes our children forever. So nice to see all of the treasures that your little one made.
We have so many plantains here in Dominican Republic. Interesting to know that you can fry up the seeds. I enjoy the leaves in my tea and use the leaves to soothe any bee or ant stings my children get.
Wow! What a beautiful looking camp experience. Lucky girl.
